About Me
Hi! I'm Catherine, I'm a mixed media artist in Dublin, Ireland.
I make brightly coloured cityscapes using lost and found objects. I collect small objects from different environments in daily life. These items are glued, wired, nailed onto the flat surface of the canvas, adding texture. By using materials such as pieces of advertising packaging, mobile phone parts and broken jewellery, this reflects the everyday material culture of the 21st century. These readymade objects help to tell a story in each painting.
My painting style evolves from several influences. Recent studies in Irish Folklore explores the use of symbolism. For example, the belief in found objects carrying the psychic energies of the places where they are discovered. My background in glass design also plays a part. Vibrant colours and different shapes are connected with lines of acrylic paint, like the separate parts of a stained-glass window. Outside of academia, my experience working as a florist for many years also developed my understanding of colours and their infinite combinations. Artistically, the aesthetic definitely veers towrds maximalsim. More is more!
The main idea in the artwork is that contemporary life is complex yet there is an overall unity to things, a chaotic order. Multi-layered cityscapes invite the viewer to discover hidden details. You may even catch a glimpse of yourself as many of the paintings feature small pieces of mirror in them. Some themes include the ever-changing urban landscape, an evolving national identity and big city energy. A sense of humour permeates the work, as serious issues such as the economy and mental health are tackled through humour, much like the cartoons that speak to both adults and younger people.
My exhibition history includes the Royal Hibernian Academy, RUA RED Arts Centre (gallery AND café), Limerick City Gallery of Art, Kinsale Arts Festival and many art centres nationwide. Work was shown in the UK and several times in the USA; most recently in Carrickahowley Gallery in Maine Irish Heritage Centre, also in Kentucky and New York City. Pieces are held in public and private collections in Ireland, the UK, the EU, USA and Western Asia. I am a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland.
Currently I am represented by Duke Street Gallery, Dublin 2 (originals) and The Copperhouse Gallery in Dublin 8 (limited edition fine art prints). Other memberships include Nua Collective (online), formed in 2020 and Walk Bye, an international artists' and community art group, based in Jersey City, USA.
There is a shop on this site for postable smaller works. Any queries just email me: redzer3@gmaill.com
