About Me
Hi! I'm Catherine, I'm an urban folk artist in Dublin, Ireland.
I make brightly coloured cityscapes using lost and found objects, collected from different environments in daily life. Friends donate materials as well. These items are glued, wired, nailed onto the flat surface of the canvas, adding 3D texture. The readymade objects tell a story in each painting.
My artwork evolved from several influences. Recent studies in Irish Folklore explores the use of symbolism. A background in glass design also plays a part. Vibrant colours and different shapes are connected with lines of acrylic paint, like the separate parts of a stained-glass window. Outside of academia, my experience working as a florist for several years developed an understanding of colours and their infinite combinations. More is more!
The main idea is that contemporary life is complex yet there is an overall unity to things, a chaotic order. Multi-layered cityscapes invite the viewer to discover hidden details. You can even catch a glimpse of yourself as many of the paintings feature small pieces of mirror in them. Some themes include the ever-changing urban landscape, Irish identity and big city energy.
My exhibition history includes the Royal Hibernian Academy, RUA RED Arts Centre (gallery and café), Limerick City Gallery of Art, Birr Theatre and Arts Centre, Kinsale Arts Festival and many art centres nationwide. My work was shown in the UK and the USA; most recently in Carrickahowley Gallery in Maine Irish Heritage Centre, also in Kentucky and New York City. Pieces are held in collections in Ireland, the UK, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, the USA and Western Asia. I am a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland.
Currently I am represented by Duke Street Gallery, Dublin 2 (originals) and The Copperhouse Gallery in Dublin 8 (limited edition fine art prints). Other memberships include Walk Bye, an international artists' and community art group, based in Jersey City, USA.
