These are some rare larger pieces. Each one has its own slideshow so you can see the level of detail. The last photo of each painting shows them in context in various exhibitions.
Blue City (It's OK Baby). 32 x 32 inches. SOLD.
Initially named Illuminati City. A solitary female figure poses in the big blue cityscape, standing still in the midst of all that is happening around her. I left room for the eye to breathe in the top section. Computer hieroglyphs, vices card, EU stars, shopping trolley, a shard of mirror, the eye of Horus, just some of the details. The city is a matrix, a puzzle to be solved. There is a small puzzle on the bottom right hand of the piece. Last image shows it in situ in the Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny city. Sold at Duke Street Gallery, D2.

You Can Do It (Put Your Back In To It). 32 x 32 inches.
This is a looser piece, taking a break from the intricate grid systems. The story behind it - I walked past a travel agents on a wet winter night, and photographed its neon sign advertising far away destinations. I knew I wanted to use these photos eventually. The centrepiece is the plastic muscular back. The title is inspired by rapper Ice Cube. It's about working hard enough to get to where you want to go. This piece is really 3 dimensional. I was also thinking of the YMCA song with the plastic builders' tools and lipstick! Also contains reflective materials for that after-dark effect. Last image shows it in an exhibition in Tamp & Stitch boutique, Temple Bar (nice part).

In Transit. 58 x 16 inches.
Made in direct response to the frantic pace of change that was in full force in Ireland at the start of the 21st century. Includes photographs and objects that I find, which are of course sterilized before use! These elements are condensed to form a sliver of that period in time. Details include advertising packaging, isolating words to play with meaning. For example 'Faster Cheaper Easier' from a Luas ticket stub, giving advice on how to navigate the urban jungle. Last image shows it in situ in Limerick City Gallery of Art.

The Tree of Life and Death. 24 x 24 inches. SOLD.
There are many paintings called the tree of life, but I wanted to include death as it is part of the life cycle and inevitable. Honouring the dead is a tradition in many cultures, perhaps most colourfully on Mexico's Day of the Dead. In this painting, fruit and flowers can be found as well as skulls and hearts. There is a reflective orange hand that is raised as if demanding to pause for a moment in the chaotic pace of contemporary life. This painting resurfaced in Jersey City in poster format in 2020. It sold at Art for ARC, a charity exhibition in aid of cancer supports in Ireland in 2021.

Just Enjoy. 39 x 12 inches. SOLD. This piece was shown in my first solo exhibition in Birr Theatre and Arts Centre. Also shown at Art on the Boardwalk, the People's Art Stephen's Green, the Icon Factory and probably other places too?! It eventually found its forever home thanks to Arthouse for Outhouse auction in 2021. The title comes from a sandwich wrapper, very simple message, to just enjoy city life, as hectic as it may be... the lilt of the Liffey, playboy bunny, celtic spirals and other treats. Last image shows it in Birr Theatre and Arts Centre, county Offaly. |
