This is a series of Irish themed painting-collages. Deconstructing and reconstructing symbols of nationalism and identity.
Some of them contain the
corners of decommissioned passports. I found a load of these near the passport office in Dublin city, a great find.

Side but relevant note: when I returned to education I chose Folklore and Irish Studies, the latter really developing the ideas that I had from my experience growing up in Ireland. Reading and writing about postcolonial theory, transgenerational trauma, and especially the concept that national identity is a construct... These paintings are a reflection of the layered and intermeshed identity, complete with its kitsch symbolism!

Smell Ireland. Acrylic and mixed media on deep edge canvas. Photos of Dublin's rapidly changing cityscape and Celtic Tiger's burned bum.

In Bits (Brushing Up to Play). Recently this featured in Open Fragment online exhibition by Pragmata Collective. The brush is wired on (bigger items are wired/nailed for safety). Acrylic and mixed media on deep edge canvas. 8 x 8 inches.
Video of this piece in Open Fragment online exhibition by Pragmata Collective. All pieces were accepted which was the right thing to do especially considering the state of the world in 2021.

In Bits (For the Way We Live Today). Previously exhibited in London in Lubomirov-Angus Hughes Gallery. Partly inspired by a Centra (convenience store) slogan and the intensely fast pace of contemporary life. Contrast convenience with 21st century poverty, as represented by the auld one brushing the floor (even though she's 19th century, Ireland still harbours an underclass - normalising homelessness, for example). Also features the corner of a passport that just reads "ach", a sigh at the state of it all. Acrylic and mixed media on deep edge canvas. 8 x 8 inches.

Enter Éire. Acrylic and mixed media on deep edge canvas. 6 x 4 inches.
Includes an Irish proverb from a sugar packet: Chomh glic le sionnach / as clever as a fox. And my signature using a found C. I gifted this to Robin Canfield, curator of Carrickahowley Art Gallery, part of Maine Irish Heritage Centre, USA, as a thank you for inviting me to participate in the Imbolc 2022 exhibition.

Matchy Matchy. Acrylic and mixed media on Cara matchboxes. SOLD.
